There is no such thing as "the best knife." There is the right knife for what you are going to do with it. The perfect steel for dispatching game is not the same one you need for carving wood all day long, nor the one you want to carry in your pocket for everyday use.
At Cudeman we have been making knives, pocket knives and axes in Albacete for more than 38 years, and this is the guide we give to anyone who asks us in the shop: organised by activity —hunting, outdoor/bushcraft, survival and everyday carry (EDC)—, with the steel, the blade geometry and the real-world use of each model. And, with no hype, also what each tool should not be used for.

How to choose a knife or pocket knife: the 3 things that really matter
- Steel rules. Molybdenum vanadium steel (MoVa, 54/56 HRc) is our all-rounder: very tough and easy to resharpen in the field even if all you carry is a basic stone. Böhler N690Co and N-695 (59/61 HRc) hold their edge far longer and resist corrosion better, in exchange for more careful sharpening. 420 steel is the most rust-resistant and the easiest to resharpen, ideal for a pocket knife in frequent use.
- Construction. "Full tang" means the steel runs the entire length of the piece from tip to butt: that is what you want for impact work. A folding pocket knife wins on portability, but no locking system is designed for prying.
- Blade geometry. A Scandinavian grind "bites" into wood (bushcraft). A flat or hollow grind slices and penetrates (hunting, general use). The point —spear, drop-point, clip-point, sheep-foot— defines what each blade excels at.
🦌 Hunting knives and pocket knives: penetration, control and easy resharpening
In hunting you prioritise an edge that goes in clean, a handle that will not slip in wet hands and a steel you can bring back to sharp before every outing. That is why here we work above all with molybdenum vanadium steel.
Dispatch knife — Rehalero 104-C

Our definitive knife for the critical moment of the driven hunt. A 23 cm spear-point blade with a fuller that lightens the whole without sacrificing integrity, 4.8 mm full-tang construction (37 cm overall) and a polished deer antler handle that fills the hand even with gloves. The hand-polished 420 stainless steel crossguard protects your fingers from sliding forward on impact, and the lanyard hole keeps it from being lost in the struggle. Molybdenum vanadium steel (54/56 HRc), 450 g, brown leather sheath made in our own workshop. Built for penetration and a safe dispatch; it is not a prying or chopping tool.

Bushcraft knife — ENT 158-M

The successor to the legendary 148, in black micarta with red liners. A 12 cm blade with a Scandinavian grind (the best for carving), 4.5 mm thick, premium Böhler N690Co steel (60/61 HRc) with a high cobalt content and a micarta handle that grips better the wetter it gets. Assembled with stainless steel Allen screws and brass bushings, with no play for life. The multi-position black leather sheath (vertical or horizontal) carries matching red stitching; the 158-MC kit adds a sharpening stone, signal mirror, fire steel and 2.8 m of 550 paracord. Its fine Scandinavian edge calls for responsible use: no machete work and no prying.

Responsible carry: always carry your pocket knife with a justified reason for use (work, licensed hunting, activity in the countryside) and check your local regulations on carrying bladed items. An EDC is a tool, not a weapon.

Frequently asked questions
Which knife is best for getting started in bushcraft?
A fixed blade with a Scandinavian grind and premium steel. Our ENT 158-M or the Bushcrafter 206-GV are the logical choice: they cut wood with ease and the handle (micarta or G10) withstands any weather.
MoVa or Böhler N690Co / N-695?
MoVa is tougher and you can resharpen it in the field with no effort: ideal for hunting and survival. The Böhler steels hold their edge much longer and resist corrosion better, in exchange for more technical sharpening: ideal for long days of bushcraft.
Is a pocket knife enough for survival, or do I need a fixed blade?
A robust pocket knife like the MT-4 or the Ranger covers most tasks and wins on portability, but for batoning or serious impact work a full-tang fixed blade (MT-5, Entresierras) is safer. No pocket knife is designed for prying.
What is the best EDC pocket knife to start with?
The Catalana M (444-BEF) is our gateway model: light, traditional and extremely easy to maintain. If you want a secure lock and wood, the Delta (344-LF); if you want the best steel, the Tundra (346-JRF) in N690Co.
Is it legal to carry a pocket knife in Spain?
Pocket knives of non-prohibited types may be carried with a justified reason (work, licensed hunting, activities in the countryside), but not in public spaces, at public events or in establishments without a legitimising cause. Interpretation depends on national regulations (the Spanish Weapons Regulation, Reglamento de Armas) and local by-laws, so always check the rules in your area before heading out with your pocket knife.
Can I throw the Eagle axe?
For sport throwing use the micarta version (175-M); the olive wood version (175-L) can split the wood of the handle under repeated impact.
