Cudeman MT-1: The Myth That Changed Everything - Survival Against the Impossible

In 2009, with the help of national cutlery enthusiast Manuel de la Torre, we decided to create a definitive tool for the mountains. This is how the Cudeman MT-1 (295-M) was born, our first pure survival model and the pioneer that unleashed a new category and trend in our catalog. We have sold so many thousands of units that our biggest mistake was not numbering them from the beginning, to know the exact quantity sold. Over time, the MT-1 has evolved, improving its steel to the current Böhler N-695 and perfecting its sheaths, but its soul remains the same. It is the undisputed icon, sporting its classic micarta handle which, over the years, adopted its characteristic red spacers.

The legend of its robustness is not mere marketing. Shortly after its launch, two "haters" of the time tried to discredit all our design and manufacturing work by subjecting the knife to an absurd and extreme test: stabbing and prying the knife against a sheet metal door to try to bend or break it. They failed miserably. The MT-1 wore them out, withstood the punishment without flinching, and showed the world that we had a true survival tank that could handle anything. That's the confidence you'll carry on your belt.

Why this Cudeman is right for you

  • Proven legendary robustness: Its ability to withstand extreme abuse guarantees that, in a real survival situation, the knife will never be the weak link.
  • Structural versatility: With 5 millimeters thick and an 11-centimeter blade, it has enough mass for chopping and processing wood, while maintaining a manageable size for camp tasks.
  • Total control under pressure: The pronounced jimping on the spine firmly grips your thumb, allowing you to apply brutal force precisely and directionally.

Steel and edge performance

The evolution of this icon led us to equip it with Böhler N-695 steel, subjected to a demanding heat treatment that yields a hardness of 59/60 HRc. This high-performance alloy ensures superb edge retention and fantastic resistance to oxidation. Its hollow grind profile combined with a satin finish gives it a deep bite for carving and cutting, although due to its high hardness, it is wise to carry a diamond sharpener in your kit to keep it sharp in the field.

Construction and resistance

The secret to its indestructibility lies in its full tang format. It is a continuous block of steel, 5 millimeters thick and 3 centimeters wide, that concentrates its 250 grams to offer brutal impact force. The scales are armored to the chassis by threaded brass internal bushings and thick stainless steel Allen screws. Although its resistance was demonstrated against sheet metal, we remind you that its aggressive Clip-Point tip is designed for penetration and incision, so we ask for common sense: use it as a survival tool, not as an industrial crowbar or another tool; remember, it is a knife, not a weapon of mass destruction.

Handle and control in real conditions

Extreme conditions demand an unyielding grip. The original MT-1 set the standard with robust satin black micarta scales, now finished with a vibrant red spacer. Micarta is an industrial-grade synthetic compound that does not swell, rot, and guarantees excellent friction even when your hands are covered in mud, rain, or sweat. To complete its extreme vocation, it features a solid pommel striker at the back, ideal for breaking glass or crushing, in addition to its corresponding lanyard hole. This model also has holes in both the blade and the end of the handle, specifically designed so that you can firmly attach it to a thin log and create a spear with the knife.

Sheath and portability

The carrying of a survival knife must adapt to the mission. We manufacture all our sheaths entirely in our workshops in Albacete, guaranteeing a quality worthy of the myth. This model offers three configuration options for your gear:

  • 295-M: Multi-position black leather sheath with striking red stitching. Elaborate, portable, and straightforward.
  • 295-MC: The definitive option. Multi-position black leather sheath with red stitching, which adds a front leather adapter equipped with a sharpening stone, signal mirror, fire steel, and red 550 paracord.
  • 295-M-K: Custom-molded Kydex sheath, geared towards a more tactical profile, waterproof, and ultra-fast extraction.

Use scenarios

  • Wood processing for fire preparation and shelter construction.
  • Extreme survival and bushcraft, leveraging its pommel striker for impact tasks.
  • Tactical and rescue companion in hostile terrain, where material reliability is vital.

Care and maintenance

  • Wash the blade with soap and water to remove resin and wood sap, preventing them from adhering to the satin finish.
  • Thoroughly dry the Böhler N-695 steel before storing it, especially if you have operated in rain or very humid environments.
  • The micarta scales are impenetrable; disregard oils or waxes, a simple brushing is enough to make them look new.
  • If you regularly use the knife for striking wood, check the tightness of the Allen screws periodically to ensure the firmness of the assembly.
  • If you choose the leather versions, store the knife out of the sheath during long periods of inactivity to prevent condensation.

The Cudeman MT-1 (295-M) is the knife that silenced the "haters" and defined modern survival. Get your hands on the legend and discover why thousands of adventurers trust their safety in the mountains to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Popular questions from our customers

  • All Cudeman products are designed and manufactured entirely in Albacete, Spain. The brand has over 38 years of experience, combining traditional Albacete cutlery craftsmanship with the latest technologies (such as laser cutting and CNC machining). When you buy a Cudeman, you are acquiring a product with a designation of origin that guarantees quality and know-how.

  • 1. Premium Steels: Böhler N695 / N690Co

These are the benchmark steels in our high-end range. Böhler is synonymous with purity and Austrian technology.

    • Properties: High hardness (58/61 HRC), excellent corrosion resistance, and superior edge retention thanks to their high chromium and cobalt content (in the case of N690Co).
    • Ideal use: Extreme survival and bushcraft knives (like the famous MT series or the Green Beret), designed to withstand intensive use without losing their edge.

    2. The Gold Standard: Molybdenum Vanadium (MoVa)

The quintessential steel of Spanish cutlery, valued for its great structural balance.

    • Properties: Reaches a hardness of 54/56 HRC. Its greatest virtue is its toughness (impact resistance) and ease of re-sharpening in the field, even with basic stones.
    • Ideal use: Hunting, finishing, and general-purpose knives. It's the all-terrain steel that never fails in hunting activities.

    3. Swedish Precision: Sandvik 12C27 / 14C28N

Very fine-grained stainless steels produced in Sweden, ideal for those seeking a "laser" edge.

    • Properties: 14C28N, in particular, offers a masterful balance between hardness (57/59 HRC) and corrosion resistance. It allows for very sharp edges that are resistant to micro-fractures.
    • Ideal use: High-end folding knives (EDC), adventure cutlery, and pieces that require a clean and precise cut.

    4. Tactical Resistance: 420 Stainless Steel

A very elastic steel resistant to external agents, used in specific high-impact pieces.

    • Properties: Lower hardness than the previous ones (50/53 HRC), which makes it extremely resistant to breakage under torsion or impact. It is virtually immune to oxidation.
    • Ideal use: Throwing knives, diving tools, and low-maintenance tactical cutlery.
  • A high-quality knife is a tool for life, but its longevity depends on maintenance, especially when combining technical steels with natural materials in the handles.

    1. Cleaning and Drying (Crucial for natural materials)

    • Hand washing: Clean the blade and handle with warm water and neutral soap. Never use a dishwasher, as extreme heat and chemical detergents are lethal to steel and wood.
    • Attention to porosity: If your Cudeman has wood, antler, or bone scales, avoid submerging them or leaving them to soak. These materials are porous; moisture can cause them to swell, crack, or separate from the knife's chassis.
    • Immediate drying: Dry the entire piece with a soft cloth immediately after washing. Make sure no moisture remains in the rivet area or joints.

    2. Lubrication and Protection

    • The Blade: If you are going to store the knife, apply a thin layer of mineral oil (or camellia oil) to the steel. This creates a hydrophobic barrier against environmental moisture, which is vital even for stainless steels.
    • The Handle: For natural wood handles, it is advisable to occasionally apply a little linseed oil or beeswax. This nourishes the material, seals the pores, and prevents it from drying out or accidentally absorbing water.

    3. Storage and Leather Sheaths

    • Leather is organic: Leather sheaths are hygroscopic (they absorb moisture). Do not store the knife inside its sheath for prolonged periods of inactivity, as the leather's tanning and retained moisture can cause oxidation pitting on the steel.
    • Sheath maintenance: Hydrate the leather regularly with horse grease or specific creams. A flexible and nourished sheath better protects your tool and prevents the leather from cracking over time.

Golden rule: A Cudeman knife is not ruined by use, but by neglect. Clean, dry, and store separately if you are not going to use it soon.

  • Cudeman offers a lifetime warranty against any manufacturing or material defects.

Important note: The warranty does not cover natural wear and tear from use, nor damage caused by misuse of the tool (such as extreme batoning with models not designed for it, throwing the knife, or using it as a lever).
Items made with natural materials (woods, antlers) or special resins (Juma) may show inherent differences in grain and color compared to the photographs. These aesthetic variations do not constitute a manufacturing defect and are therefore not covered by the warranty or eligible for return.
