Cudeman Quercus: technical sobriety and survival essence

The Cudeman Quercus in its black micarta version represents the most tactical and functional side of a design that is already a legend. The result of the first historical collaboration between our company and Grupo BS9, this model bears the essence of José Sabater, whose signature on the back guarantees that every detail has been designed for real use in isolation conditions. Each unit leaves our workshops numbered, reaffirming its exclusive character and its piece-by-piece controlled quality.

Originally launched in late 2017, the Quercus is a full tang knife that stands out for its chameleon-like ergonomics. Its design allows alternating between a forward grip for precision tasks, a standard position for powerful cuts, and a rear grip that takes advantage of its pommel for chopping, making it a complete tool for the outdoor environment.

Why this Cudeman is right for you

  • Smart protection during batoning: It has an unusual structural feature: the micarta is internal in the area where it meets the blade, allowing the blade to be struck with a log with complete confidence without impacting the handle material, avoiding accidental cracks.
  • Integrated ignition system: The handle has an internal socket designed to house the shaft of a bow drill, serving as an ergonomic pressure point to generate fire by friction with less effort.
  • Millimetric control: The upper notch for the thumb allows direct pressure on the handle, facilitating carving or food preparation tasks with superior stability.
  • Striking versatility: Its rear part is designed to act as a hammer, adding a vital functionality for driving stakes or making adjustments at the campsite.

Steel and edge performance

Forged in molybdenum vanadium steel with a hardness of 54/56 HRc, the Quercus offers the perfect balance that every survivor seeks: high impact resistance and simple edge maintenance in the middle of nowhere. The satin finish of its drop-point blade is not only aesthetic, but also reduces friction during cutting, allowing the steel to work efficiently with wood or in game processing.

Construction and resistance

With a 3.8 mm spine, this knife offers surprising robustness for its contained weight. The fastening of the scales with stainless steel Allen screws and brass bushings ensures that the tool remains compact and free of vibrations. Being a full tang piece, the user receives all the cutting energy directly in the hand, which transmits an unbreakable feeling of solidity in every task.

Handle and control in real conditions

The black satin micarta with elegant red liners offers extreme durability and neutral behavior against humidity. Unlike wood, this synthetic material does not expand or contract, maintaining a perfect fit with the steel in any climate. Its satin finish provides a comfortable and secure grip, complemented by a lanyard hole that allows for dynamic and protected use.

Sheath and portability

The Quercus sheath is a top-quality black leather suit, handcrafted by our master saddlers in Albacete. It is designed to withstand constant rubbing and the passage of time. Depending on your outing profile, you can choose between two carrying configurations:

  • 160-M: Includes the multi-position black leather sheath, optimized to carry the knife discreetly and securely both vertically and horizontally.
  • 160-MC: The complete version oriented to total autonomy, which adds a leather attachment with a sharpening stone, emergency signal mirror, fire steel, and high-strength 550 paracord.

Use scenarios

  • Advanced Bushcraft: Its specific design for friction fire and protected batoning makes it the preferred tool for survival instructors.
  • Light expeditions: Weighing only 220 grams, it is the ideal companion for those looking for a powerful tool without overloading their backpack equipment.
  • Outdoor: The drop-point tip and its unusual but ergonomic handle allow field work with the precision of a much smaller knife.

Care and maintenance

  • Clean the blade with a dry cloth after use to prevent plant acids from affecting the satin finish of the steel.
  • Micarta is a very resistant material, but it will appreciate periodic cleaning with a soft brush and soapy water to remove resin residue or accumulated dirt.
  • Always store the knife in a dry place and prevent the leather sheath from remaining damp for prolonged periods.
  • As it is a numbered piece, avoid using aggressive chemicals on the blade engravings.
  • Maintain the working edge using leather strops or fine-grit stones to preserve its excellent original cutting ability.

The Cudeman Quercus (160-M/160-MC) in black micarta is the ultimate tool for those who value history, technique, and reliability. A numbered knife, designed for the adventurer who wants an all-in-one, ready to face any forest challenge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Popular questions from our customers

  • All Cudeman products are designed and manufactured entirely in Albacete, Spain. The brand has over 38 years of experience, combining traditional Albacete cutlery craftsmanship with the latest technologies (such as laser cutting and CNC machining). When you buy a Cudeman, you are acquiring a product with a designation of origin that guarantees quality and know-how.

  • 1. Premium Steels: Böhler N695 / N690Co

These are the benchmark steels in our high-end range. Böhler is synonymous with purity and Austrian technology.

    • Properties: High hardness (58/61 HRC), excellent corrosion resistance, and superior edge retention thanks to their high chromium and cobalt content (in the case of N690Co).
    • Ideal use: Extreme survival and bushcraft knives (like the famous MT series or the Green Beret), designed to withstand intensive use without losing their edge.

    2. The Gold Standard: Molybdenum Vanadium (MoVa)

The quintessential steel of Spanish cutlery, valued for its great structural balance.

    • Properties: Reaches a hardness of 54/56 HRC. Its greatest virtue is its toughness (impact resistance) and ease of re-sharpening in the field, even with basic stones.
    • Ideal use: Hunting, finishing, and general-purpose knives. It's the all-terrain steel that never fails in hunting activities.

    3. Swedish Precision: Sandvik 12C27 / 14C28N

Very fine-grained stainless steels produced in Sweden, ideal for those seeking a "laser" edge.

    • Properties: 14C28N, in particular, offers a masterful balance between hardness (57/59 HRC) and corrosion resistance. It allows for very sharp edges that are resistant to micro-fractures.
    • Ideal use: High-end folding knives (EDC), adventure cutlery, and pieces that require a clean and precise cut.

    4. Tactical Resistance: 420 Stainless Steel

A very elastic steel resistant to external agents, used in specific high-impact pieces.

    • Properties: Lower hardness than the previous ones (50/53 HRC), which makes it extremely resistant to breakage under torsion or impact. It is virtually immune to oxidation.
    • Ideal use: Throwing knives, diving tools, and low-maintenance tactical cutlery.
  • A high-quality knife is a tool for life, but its longevity depends on maintenance, especially when combining technical steels with natural materials in the handles.

    1. Cleaning and Drying (Crucial for natural materials)

    • Hand washing: Clean the blade and handle with warm water and neutral soap. Never use a dishwasher, as extreme heat and chemical detergents are lethal to steel and wood.
    • Attention to porosity: If your Cudeman has wood, antler, or bone scales, avoid submerging them or leaving them to soak. These materials are porous; moisture can cause them to swell, crack, or separate from the knife's chassis.
    • Immediate drying: Dry the entire piece with a soft cloth immediately after washing. Make sure no moisture remains in the rivet area or joints.

    2. Lubrication and Protection

    • The Blade: If you are going to store the knife, apply a thin layer of mineral oil (or camellia oil) to the steel. This creates a hydrophobic barrier against environmental moisture, which is vital even for stainless steels.
    • The Handle: For natural wood handles, it is advisable to occasionally apply a little linseed oil or beeswax. This nourishes the material, seals the pores, and prevents it from drying out or accidentally absorbing water.

    3. Storage and Leather Sheaths

    • Leather is organic: Leather sheaths are hygroscopic (they absorb moisture). Do not store the knife inside its sheath for prolonged periods of inactivity, as the leather's tanning and retained moisture can cause oxidation pitting on the steel.
    • Sheath maintenance: Hydrate the leather regularly with horse grease or specific creams. A flexible and nourished sheath better protects your tool and prevents the leather from cracking over time.

Golden rule: A Cudeman knife is not ruined by use, but by neglect. Clean, dry, and store separately if you are not going to use it soon.

  • Cudeman offers a lifetime warranty against any manufacturing or material defects.

Important note: The warranty does not cover natural wear and tear from use, nor damage caused by misuse of the tool (such as extreme batoning with models not designed for it, throwing the knife, or using it as a lever).
Items made with natural materials (woods, antlers) or special resins (Juma) may show inherent differences in grain and color compared to the photographs. These aesthetic variations do not constitute a manufacturing defect and are therefore not covered by the warranty or eligible for return.
