Cudeman Quercus: A Bushcraft Legend Born from BS9 Collaboration

The Cudeman Quercus is not just another knife; it's a piece with history and soul that came to life when the blade dropped in 2017. It was the first tool we designed in collaboration with the BS9 Group, incorporating the vision of José Sabater, whose name is signed on the back of each piece as a seal of authenticity. Each example of this model is unique, as it includes its own engraved serial number, making it a desirable object for both collectors and survival experts.

Its design is a compendium of intelligent technical solutions. From its versatile ergonomics, which allows for a forward grip for precision cuts or a rear grip for chopping, to its construction designed for rough handling, the Quercus is a full-tang knife that embodies reliability. It is a technical, balanced tool with a success story that endorses it as one of the pillars of our production in Albacete.

Why this Cudeman is right for you

  • Impact-resistant engineering: It features an exceptional technical detail: the American canvas is internal in the joint area with the blade, allowing for batoning without directly hitting the handle material, thus avoiding any risk of breakage.
  • Integrated friction fire starter: The handle incorporates an internal bushing specifically designed to act as a support point or pusher when starting a friction fire, facilitating this critical survival technique.
  • Three-position ergonomics: Its handle allows for total control: use the thumb notch for powerful tasks, the traditional grip for clean cuts, or the wide rear part to maximize inertia when chopping.
  • Drop-point versatility: The geometry of its tip offers a perfect balance between piercing capability and resistance, ideal for versatile field tasks.

Steel and edge performance

The Quercus blade is made of molybdenum vanadium steel, reaching a hardness of 54/56 HRc. This steel is especially valued in the outdoor world for its excellent balance between toughness against impacts and ease of maintenance. Its satin finish and grind are optimized to offer a fluid cut, allowing the user to restore the working edge in the wild with basic tools, ensuring that the knife is never a hindrance, but a solution.

Construction and resistance

We are talking about a solid piece 3.8 mm thick that stands out for its structural resistance. Stainless steel Allen screws and brass bushings ensure that the assembly does not come loose. In addition to its batoning capability, the design includes a hammer function on the pommel, which expands its use possibilities at the campsite without compromising the integrity of the tool. It is a robust knife, although we always recommend responsible use to maintain its structure and finishes in optimal condition.

Handle and control in real conditions

The green American canvas handle with red spacers is not only visually striking for its snake-like appearance, but also offers one of the best grip textures available. The canvas is extremely durable and improves its grip when wet or dirty, providing essential security in adverse climates. Its anatomical shape has been studied to reduce pressure points, allowing you to work for hours without excessive hand fatigue.

Sheath and portability

True to our commitment to quality, the sheath for this model has been handcrafted in our own workshops. It is a high-resistance black leather piece, designed to offer security and comfort when carrying. Depending on your equipment, you can choose between two variants of our own manufacture:

  • 160-F: Supplied with the multi-position black leather sheath, ideal for carrying on the belt both vertically and horizontally depending on the terrain.
  • 160-FC: The complete version that includes the survival kit on the leather sheath, equipped with a sharpening stone, signal mirror, flint, and high-strength paracord for any contingency.

Usage scenarios

  • Signature Bushcraft: Thanks to its specific BS9 design, it is the perfect tool for those who practice primitive fire techniques and shelter building.
  • Technical Survival: Its serial numbering and batoning capability make it ideal for emergency teams where the tool must withstand the unexpected.
  • Hunting and general outdoor: Its drop-point tip and variable ergonomics allow processing game or preparing food with the same efficiency as cutting wood.

Care and maintenance

  • Clean the blade after each use, especially if it has been in contact with resins or vegetable acids, to maintain the original satin finish.
  • Thoroughly dry the piece before storing it in its leather sheath to prevent moisture from affecting the molybdenum vanadium steel.
  • The canvas is a very hard-wearing material, but it will appreciate occasional cleaning with soap and water to remove grease or mud residues and restore its original feel.
  • As it is a numbered piece, avoid using strong abrasives on the engraving to maintain the legibility of your unique serial number.
  • Store the knife in a dry and ventilated place, ensuring that the leather sheath does not absorb prolonged ambient moisture.

The Cudeman Quercus (160-F/160-FC) is a piece of Spanish cutlery history. A signed and numbered tool, designed by experts for those who settle for nothing less than excellence in the wilderness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Popular questions from our customers

  • All Cudeman products are designed and manufactured entirely in Albacete, Spain. The brand has over 38 years of experience, combining traditional Albacete cutlery craftsmanship with the latest technologies (such as laser cutting and CNC machining). When you buy a Cudeman, you are acquiring a product with a designation of origin that guarantees quality and know-how.

  • 1. Premium Steels: Böhler N695 / N690Co

These are the benchmark steels in our high-end range. Böhler is synonymous with purity and Austrian technology.

    • Properties: High hardness (58/61 HRC), excellent corrosion resistance, and superior edge retention thanks to their high chromium and cobalt content (in the case of N690Co).
    • Ideal use: Extreme survival and bushcraft knives (like the famous MT series or the Green Beret), designed to withstand intensive use without losing their edge.

    2. The Gold Standard: Molybdenum Vanadium (MoVa)

The quintessential steel of Spanish cutlery, valued for its great structural balance.

    • Properties: Reaches a hardness of 54/56 HRC. Its greatest virtue is its toughness (impact resistance) and ease of re-sharpening in the field, even with basic stones.
    • Ideal use: Hunting, finishing, and general-purpose knives. It's the all-terrain steel that never fails in hunting activities.

    3. Swedish Precision: Sandvik 12C27 / 14C28N

Very fine-grained stainless steels produced in Sweden, ideal for those seeking a "laser" edge.

    • Properties: 14C28N, in particular, offers a masterful balance between hardness (57/59 HRC) and corrosion resistance. It allows for very sharp edges that are resistant to micro-fractures.
    • Ideal use: High-end folding knives (EDC), adventure cutlery, and pieces that require a clean and precise cut.

    4. Tactical Resistance: 420 Stainless Steel

A very elastic steel resistant to external agents, used in specific high-impact pieces.

    • Properties: Lower hardness than the previous ones (50/53 HRC), which makes it extremely resistant to breakage under torsion or impact. It is virtually immune to oxidation.
    • Ideal use: Throwing knives, diving tools, and low-maintenance tactical cutlery.
  • A high-quality knife is a tool for life, but its longevity depends on maintenance, especially when combining technical steels with natural materials in the handles.

    1. Cleaning and Drying (Crucial for natural materials)

    • Hand washing: Clean the blade and handle with warm water and neutral soap. Never use a dishwasher, as extreme heat and chemical detergents are lethal to steel and wood.
    • Attention to porosity: If your Cudeman has wood, antler, or bone scales, avoid submerging them or leaving them to soak. These materials are porous; moisture can cause them to swell, crack, or separate from the knife's chassis.
    • Immediate drying: Dry the entire piece with a soft cloth immediately after washing. Make sure no moisture remains in the rivet area or joints.

    2. Lubrication and Protection

    • The Blade: If you are going to store the knife, apply a thin layer of mineral oil (or camellia oil) to the steel. This creates a hydrophobic barrier against environmental moisture, which is vital even for stainless steels.
    • The Handle: For natural wood handles, it is advisable to occasionally apply a little linseed oil or beeswax. This nourishes the material, seals the pores, and prevents it from drying out or accidentally absorbing water.

    3. Storage and Leather Sheaths

    • Leather is organic: Leather sheaths are hygroscopic (they absorb moisture). Do not store the knife inside its sheath for prolonged periods of inactivity, as the leather's tanning and retained moisture can cause oxidation pitting on the steel.
    • Sheath maintenance: Hydrate the leather regularly with horse grease or specific creams. A flexible and nourished sheath better protects your tool and prevents the leather from cracking over time.

Golden rule: A Cudeman knife is not ruined by use, but by neglect. Clean, dry, and store separately if you are not going to use it soon.

  • Cudeman offers a lifetime warranty against any manufacturing or material defects.

Important note: The warranty does not cover natural wear and tear from use, nor damage caused by misuse of the tool (such as extreme batoning with models not designed for it, throwing the knife, or using it as a lever).
Items made with natural materials (woods, antlers) or special resins (Juma) may show inherent differences in grain and color compared to the photographs. These aesthetic variations do not constitute a manufacturing defect and are therefore not covered by the warranty or eligible for return.
