Cudeman FAB (298-K): The legendary knife forged by the community of experts
There are tools that are born from a drawing board, and others that come to life thanks to the experience of those who really get their hands dirty in the mountains or love national sports cutlery. The Cudeman 298-K (FAB) model belongs to this latter lineage. Its story began in 2010, when we launched the acclaimed FAB I in direct collaboration with the Foro de Armas Blancas (White Weapons Forum). That first edition, which featured white Micarta scales, laid the groundwork for resounding success and earned a spectacular reputation among survival purists. Today, we present the perfected evolution of that myth, now with the timeless elegance of natural wood.
True to our philosophy of continuous improvement in Albacete, we have updated its geometry. The curved machining of the first edition has given way to a straight-lined grind, much more modern and brutally efficient in cutting. It is the maturity of a consecrated design, manufactured for the adventurer who demands maximum technical performance wrapped in the beauty of classic materials.
Why this Cudeman is right for you
- Redesigned and superior cut: Its new straight machining optimizes the penetration angle and facilitates sharpening, resulting in outstanding performance when processing wood.
- Powerful balance: With 5 millimeters thick and 3.5 centimeters wide blade, its 270 grams offer a formidable mass for chopping without being a hindrance at the waist.
- Total traction and safety: The jimping on the spine provides a secure thumb rest for precision work, while its imposing pommel is ready for percussion and impact tasks.
Steel and edge performance
The reputation of the FAB demands an indefatigable engine. For this reason, the blade is forged from formidable Böhler N-695 steel, subjected to a heat treatment that pushes its hardness up to 59/60 HRc. This alloy guarantees you superlative edge retention during long bushcraft sessions and magnificent resistance to oxidation. Its straight grind profile with a satin finish penetrates material with astonishing fluidity, although due to its extreme hardness, we advise you to carry a diamond or ceramic stone in your kit to keep its bite intact.
Construction and resistance
Solid construction is the undeniable hallmark of this model. We are looking at a full tang structure where the same steel plate runs along the entire 23.5 centimeters of the tool. The scales are anchored to the chassis with millimeter precision using threaded brass internal bushings and stainless steel Allen screws. It is a tank ready for hard work, but always applying common sense: its Drop-Point tip is perfect for directional cutting and butchering, not for use as another tool or forced prying.
Handle and control in real conditions
A knife with this level of demand needs a grip to match. This version features magnificent satin-finished cocobolo scales, a dense and noble wood that absorbs impact vibrations excellently. Its ergonomic design blends with the palm of the hand, offering a warm feel that delays muscle fatigue during heavy carving. To top off your safety, the robust pommel has a lanyard hole, ensuring that the tool does not escape your control during the most violent movements.
Sheath and portability
The evolution of the knife was accompanied by the evolution of its carrying system. The simple sheath of the early days is gone; today, the FAB 298-K includes an advanced multi-position brown leather sheath equipped with high-strength loops and snaps. As is customary in our house, this piece is one hundred percent our own manufacture, cut and assembled by our artisans. For this model with cocobolo wood, we offer two configuration options:
- 298-K: Multi-position brown leather sheath. Simple, elegant, and directly on the belt both vertically and horizontally.
- 298-KC: The complete kit in your hands. Multi-position brown leather sheath that incorporates a front adapter equipped with a sharpening stone, signal mirror, flint, and coyote-colored paracord 550, to have a comprehensive survival kit.
Use scenarios
- Intensive bushcraft and camp preparation, using its mass to process firewood using the batoning technique.
- General field work where percussion is required thanks to its solid pommel.
- Main companion during hunting trips, taking advantage of the versatility and control of its Drop-Point blade.
Care and maintenance
- Always remove sap, resin, or blood residue from the satin blade with soap and neutral water before they dry.
- Make sure to completely dry the Böhler N-695 before inserting it into the leather, thus preventing any superficial oxidation marks.
- Being a noble wood like cocobolo, you can occasionally apply a few drops of natural wax or linseed oil to enhance its grain and prevent cracks, but remember to always store it in a dry place and do not over-moisten it.
- Periodically check the tightness of the Allen screws if the knife has endured long sessions of chopping and vibration.
- Keep the jimping on the spine free of embedded dirt so that your thumb continues to find the maximum possible grip.
The Cudeman FAB (298-K) is the result of listening to those who love this craft. A tool manufactured in Albacete that combines the effectiveness of modern design with the history of a design created for the community and lovers of Spanish steel.
